John Bujak: Kleopatra, I've got a house. I've got kitchens, I've got bathrooms, I've got countertops somewhere that hold my coffee. What should I be putting in my house? Do I want marble, granite or quartz?

Kleopatra: Well, it's really up to you. If you're going to use granite, you can put things hot on there. If you want quartz because it's nice and clean looking, you can get a consistent pattern. Marble is really just to look at. Very pretty, just there for show.

John Bujak: Really?

Kleopatra: Marble's more of a showpiece.

John Bujak of America's Home Experts talks with Kleopatra from Marble and Granite Express. Lightly edited for readability.

Granite: Best for Busy, Hands-On Kitchens

Granite is natural stone, quarried and cut into slabs, so no two are the same. It handles heat well, which is why Kleopatra points to it for anyone who wants to set hot things down. It does need to be sealed periodically to resist stains.

Quartz: A Clean, Consistent Look

Quartz is engineered from natural quartz and resin, so the color and pattern are consistent from one end of the kitchen to the other. It never needs sealing and resists stains, but it should not take direct high heat. Always use a trivet.

Marble: The Showpiece

Marble has soft, elegant veining that is hard to match. It is softer than granite and can etch from acidic foods like lemon, vinegar and wine, so it works best where it is admired more than worked on, like a bathroom vanity, a fireplace surround or a baking station.
