Marble and Granite Express

Granite and quartz are the two most popular countertop materials we install in Wayne, Canton, Westland, Livonia and across Western Wayne County. Both are durable, beautiful and add real value to a home, but they are very different products. Here is a straightforward comparison to help you decide which one fits your kitchen, your budget and the way your family actually lives.

What’s the Difference?

Granite is natural stone, quarried in large blocks and cut into slabs. No two slabs are the same, so every granite countertop is one of a kind, with natural veining, flecks and color movement.

Quartz is an engineered stone made mostly from ground natural quartz bound with resins and pigments. Because it’s manufactured, colors and patterns are consistent, and it can be made to look like marble, concrete or solid color.

Appearance

If you love the idea of a truly unique surface with depth and natural character, granite is hard to beat. Many homeowners pick their exact slab so they know what they’re getting.

If you prefer a clean, uniform look, or you want the look of white marble without marble’s upkeep, quartz gives you more predictable results. It’s also easier to match across a large kitchen with an island and multiple runs.

Durability and Heat Resistance

Both materials are very hard and resist scratches from everyday use. The biggest practical difference is heat:

  • Granite handles heat well. Setting a warm pan down briefly is generally fine, although trivets are always the safest habit.
  • Quartz contains resin, which can scorch or discolor under direct high heat. Always use a trivet or hot pad with quartz.

Quartz is also not recommended for outdoor kitchens, because long-term sun exposure can fade or yellow the resins. Granite holds up better outdoors.

Maintenance

Granite is naturally porous, so it should be sealed. A good seal keeps oils, wine and coffee from soaking in. How often depends on the stone, but many homeowners reseal about once a year. A simple water test (more on that in our care guide) tells you when it’s time.

Quartz is non-porous and never needs sealing. Wipe it with warm water and mild dish soap and you’re done. For busy households, that low maintenance is a big reason people choose quartz.

Cost

Installed prices for granite and quartz overlap heavily. Entry-level granite is often a little less expensive than comparable quartz, while exotic granites and designer quartz can both reach the top of the range. The final number depends far more on the specific slab, the size of your project, the edge profile and the number of cutouts than on the material category. Our countertop cost guide breaks this down.

Quick Comparison

  • Look: Granite is one-of-a-kind natural pattern; quartz is consistent and uniform.
  • Heat: Granite is very good; quartz needs trivets.
  • Sealing: Granite needs it periodically; quartz never does.
  • Stain resistance: Granite is good when sealed; quartz is excellent.
  • Outdoor use: Granite yes; quartz not recommended.
  • Cost: Similar ranges; it depends on the slab and project.

So Which Should You Choose?

Choose granite if you want a unique natural stone, cook a lot and want heat resistance, or are planning an outdoor kitchen.

Choose quartz if you want a consistent look, the lowest possible maintenance, or a marble-style look without marble’s care routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is quartz stronger than granite?

Both are very durable for everyday kitchen use. Quartz is slightly more flexible and less prone to chipping at edges, while granite is more heat resistant. For most homes, either will last for decades with basic care.

Does granite or quartz add more resale value?

Both are seen as premium upgrades by buyers. A well-chosen, well-installed stone countertop in either material helps a kitchen show well.

Can I see slabs before I decide?

Yes, and we recommend it, especially for granite, since every slab is different.
