What Should You Not Use to Clean Granite Countertops?

48-Second Video AnswerFrom Our TeamCountertop Care

The Short Answer

Avoid anything acidic or harsh: lemon juice, vinegar, bleach, Lysol and disinfecting wipes, even ones labeled granite-friendly. They take away the sheen and leave the stone hazy. Dish soap is fine.

John Bujak: Kleopatra, we've talked a lot about granite and quartz. What should I not be using to clean my granite countertops?

Kleopatra: Don't use anything acidic.

John Bujak: So no lemon juice?

Kleopatra: No lemon juice. No vinegar. No bleach, definitely no bleach.

John Bujak: Dawn soap?

Kleopatra: Dawn soap is okay. You can use any soap. Other common cleaning products like Lysol, don't use that.

John Bujak: We use Lysol disinfectant wipes all the time.

Kleopatra: Don't use those. Even if it says it's granite friendly, I would advise you not to, just because it can take that sheen away, and it becomes hazy.

John Bujak: Good to know. Don't use disinfectant wipes on your granite countertops.

Skip These on Granite

Lemon juice, vinegar, bleach, Lysol sprays and disinfecting wipes, including wipes labeled safe for granite. Acids and harsh chemicals dull the polish and leave a hazy film.

What Is Safe

Dish soap, like Dawn, and warm water. Any mild soap works. Wipe, rinse and dry.
