Can You Cut Food Directly on Granite or Quartz Countertops?

20-Second Video AnswerFrom Our TeamCountertop Care

The Short Answer

Once in a while, yes. Kleopatra says cutting a pizza right on the counter is okay now and then, even on quartz, but she would not do it all the time. Use a cutting board for everyday prep.

John Bujak: All right, Kleopatra, I take the pizza out of the oven, I put it on the granite countertop and I'm cutting it with the pizza cutter. Is that safe?

Kleopatra: Well, this is quartz, but go for it. If you want to cut it up for show, however you want to. Just once in a while. I wouldn't do it all the time.

John Bujak: So it's even safe to cut on quartz?

Kleopatra: Yeah, you can. That's okay.

Why Not Every Day?

Stone is hard enough to dull your knives quickly, and repeated cutting in the same spot can wear the polish over time. A cutting board protects both.

Watch the Heat on Quartz

Cutting is one thing, but a hot pizza pan is another. Quartz contains resin that can scorch, so set hot pans on a trivet. Granite handles heat better.
